Argentina , Mexico, and Peru are home to the most intense Jacobean history in the Americas, almost always linked to the warrior-religious figure of Saint James , brought from Spain. Part of the responsibility for this presence lay with the knights of the Order of Santiago , who participated in conquest campaigns on the continent during the 16th century. The natives, who were terrified by the magical warrior invoked by the Spanish invaders, ended up appropriating him and introducing him as part of their own beliefs, in an imaginative act of syncretism.
